GetHub Integration?

stephen pace 4 years ago updated by hannah gryska 2 years ago 7

How easy or hard is it to check in changes to something like GitHub? Is there an automated way to do this? If so, can you point me to some documentation? I looked but didn't see anything. We have a prospect that has a requirement to do this. Their current modeling solution doesn't support Snowflake but does support checking into GetHub. I'd like to provide them some options. Thanks!

Investigating

Dear User,

Currently we do not have this feature in SqlDBM.

But, we have ticket for support of this feature in our development pipeline. Once that ticket gets prioritized we will update you.

Do you mind telling us which other modelling solution your prospect is using, so we can get some idea on GitHub integration?

Please feel free to contact us in case you have any further questions.

Thanks,

Team - SqlDBM

Let me check. We received a questionnaire that didn't mention the tool (it might be more than one), but we have some meetings with them coming up and I'll try to get more detail.

Great, let us know when you have the information about which tool/s that your clients are using at present.

Also, I think it would be useful for us to know little more details on GitHub integration.

What are the benefits it provides to the user , what are the different use cases for it, like:

- Check in - generated SQL

- Check in - whole project or Changes : which could be our Json Model or non-readable data

Thanks,

Team - SqlDBM

We received a bit more information about their use case. They essentially want a system that can look at a Dev or Test system and show any changes from Production. Let's say an attribute got added. They want the DDL generated such that instead of a CREATE OR REPLACE TABLE, the system would be smart enough to issue ALTER TABLE statements to add the new column rather than dropping and readding a table (losing data in the process). I'm not 100% they have this working today in their current system (I still need to learn more about this), but that is the jist of their issue.

Dear Stephen,

I agree this would be good idea, to save different versions of DDLs and then possible able to generate "Alter" statements between different versions so that user does not need to drop table and loose all its data.

I will add this ticket in our development pipeline, discuss with our team and try to prioritize it.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Please feel free to contact us in case you have further suggestions/questions.

By the way, did you find out which tool your client is currently using which has GitHub integration.

Team - SqlDBM

Hi Stephen,

We know this has certainly been awhile, but we did want to alert you that Git Integration has been released! We'd love to sit down with you and your team to showcase this feature and thank you for your patience & information, which helped us along the way.
